Power Banks – A Very Detailed Guide

Mobile phones are getting smarter and also faster day by day. Every months we see new models of smartphones getting lunched by top brands. Though these smartphones keep getting additional features, the battery life of the mobile phones does not seem to get more better than earlier versions. Also mobile phones are now used not only for making calls or sending text messages, they are used for variety of different purposes like watching movies, listening songs, surfing internet, chatting and checking emails. With so much of use, the mobile phone batteries easily run out of charge in less than 8 hours. So if you want to keep your mobile phone charged all day, you will need a device called power bank that can charge your smartphones on the go.

What is Power Bank

Power banks are portable device which is comprised of a special battery in a special case with a special circuit to control power flow. It can be charged in advance for later smartphones, tablets or laptops to recharge. A Power Bank is a handy gadget that you can charge your electric devices without a power socket. Power banks is an external battery charger that comes with a USB cable; you connect it to a power source such as a laptop to charge the power bank. It contain either lithium polymer or lithium ion battery with a 5V 1A and or 2A USB output for charging mobile phones, digital cameras, MP3, MP4 players, iPods, iPads, tablet, satellite phones or any product that can be charged from standard USB 5V charging technology.

Power Bank Safety Components

The main component of any power bank contains a Lithium-Ion or Lithium-Polymer battery. These type of battery is commonly used in many electronic gadgets. Though they are safe, but following points need to be kept in consideration.

Battery Quality: Grade A is said to be a good quality battery. The real test is whether or not the battery has a UL certification. UL LLC is an American worldwide safety consulting and certification company headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois. It maintains offices in 46 countries.UL provides safety-related certification, validation, testing, inspection, auditing, advising and training services to a wide range of clients, including manufacturers, retailers, policymakers, regulators, service companies, and consumers.

Protective Circuitry: The protective circuitry is considered a safety valve. It protects the device, the charged gadgets and the internal circuit. Protective circuitry prevents external and internal short circuit, over charging and forced discharge.

Features To Look When Buying a Power Bank

In present day, we use electronic devices on day-to-day basis, such as our mobile phones, tablets. The problem with these so powerful devices we are using is that it consumes a lot of energy, and they could drain their own batteries in such a short time. Power banks come in all shapes, weights and capacities, from emergency credit-card-sized devices such as the Onaji Pawa that offers a quick boost to keep you going until you get home. The weigh of these power banks also depends on the chosen material for its construction, while most manufacturers op for plastic cases, some go as far as to encase their rechargeable batteries.

Capacity: When purchasing your power bank, it is crucial that you don’t purchase one below the capacity of your phone as you would not be able to even charge your phone for a cycle. Thus, do check your phone’s battery capacity before continuing. This battery can actually charge three devices simultaneously, which could be extremely handy, though it’s worth noting that the total maximum output at any time is 3.4A. Does a high capacity power bank charge your smartphone faster than a low capacity power bank. The answer is no. The charging speed of your smartphone is determined by the output current and not the capacity of the power bank. The output current of most power bank ranges from 1A to 2.1A. If this output current of the power bank is high than it will charge your power bank much faster.

Charger specifications: Charger specification should located on usb adapter bundled with your device. The information we are looking for is the output voltage and output current of the adapter. The power bank you should purchase must have at least the same size as our device battery to ensure at least 1-full charge for your device. For example: If we have iPhone5, we should buy a power bank with at least 1440mAh.

Charging Type: Most people make the mistake of calculating the number of times the power bank charges their smart phones / iPhone by charging their smartphones middle of the way or by leaving the smartphone on while charging. The problem is that it is harder to charge the smartphone near maximum charge as the power bank would spend more power to charge your phone when it reaches 80 to 90% battery charge.

Input Rating: The input rating is key when it comes to recharging the power bank – the higher is this figure the more quickly it will charge. You’ll usually see a figure in Amps, for instance 1A. You multiply this number by the voltage (5V for USB) to find the rating in Watts. A 1A input can charge at 5W, therefore, but you’d do better to look for a device that can charge at 2A (10W). This is a really good-looking, slim battery pack, with an eye-catching diamond pattern. It has two output cables built-in, a microUSB, and a Lightning cable.

Device Depletion: In simple term, device depletion is the measurement in percentage about the health of your mobile phone battery. Older phones have battery that use to last long, but today’s smartphone batteries drains out fast owing to more function the mobile phones have and hence the more power is consumed by the phone. Many smartphones will “lose” up to 10% within a few minutes of coming off the charger. The reality is that the battery was only at 100% capacity for a brief moment, after which the battery management system allowed it to slowly dip down to around 90%.

Top Power Banks 2016

Here are some of the best power banks you can find on the market.

TP-Link TL-PB10400 10400mAh Power Bank:
Tp link Power Bank India
TP-Link is well-known for producing quality tech at affordable prices, and its 10400mAh Power Bank is no different. You can plug a phone into this second output, of course – it will draw only the power it requires – but some tablets may not like the 1A output. Built-in short circuit, over-voltage, over-current, over-charge, over-discharge, and over-heating protections to ensure safe charging. You charge the device (which itself is 95% battery, and 5% casing and USB ports, plus in some cases like this one a modest flashlight), then you stuff it in your computer bag/purse/luggage and pull it out in situations where you need to charge your portable USB device and don’t have a standard power outlet handy.

Full discharge without any use from a fully charged state will take months. However, if you use it, and forget to recharge it when you get home, and you put it on the shelf for a few months, you may well find your device in a state of deep discharge and it might stop working properly. The TP-Link has a built-in LED flashlight, too, which is turned on with a long-press of the status button. TP-LINK claims this high capacity power bank can quickly charge one and even two devices at the same time. After charging up the power bank’s battery, which took quite a few hours, we put the TL-PB10400 to the test.

EasyAcc 20000mAh Power Bank:
Easyacc Power Bank India
20000mAh capacity yet very portable, it is perfect for trips or whenever you need to charge your iPhone, iPad and other mobile devices. e.g. Business trip, traveling, parties, BBQs and outdoor activities like camping, mountain climbing and picnics. The product comes in a very simple cardboard box that has no graphical designs on it. If it was in a retail store, I would’ve passed by it. Upon opening the box, I found the power bank was wrapped in a plastic bag to protect it from dust and fingerprints by the factory or shipper. In taking that out, I found the User Manual underneath with 2 micro USB cables that were in a hidden compartment that had to be lifted out of the layer of cardboard in the interior. Everything was tightly snug when packaged.

There is a maximum of 4.8mAh which is quite good because you can charge 2 iPads simultaneously. The monster also has a built in light but this is legitimately a flashlight. This power bank is not small or light. It is powerful enough to recharge two iPads simultaneously and actually recharge your iPad while using which is also not an easy feat. The 4 port smart charging is great to have on a power bank, the actual usable light is a great addition too.

Anker 2nd Gen Astro E4 13000mAh Portable Charger External Battery Power Bank:
Anker Astro Power Bank
This 13000mAh power bank from Anker is capable of charging the Apple iPhone 6 nearly 5 times, iPhone 5S 6 times, iPad Air once, iPad Mini 1.5 times, Samsung Galaxy S5 3.5 times, Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Note 3 2.75 times and the Google Nexus 7 2.5 times. If you feel you’re making too many compromises for the sake of battery life (airplane mode, lowering the brightness, etc.), get yourself an external battery. Throw it in your bag, and forget about finding outlets in public spaces anymore. Glossy black finish, with glossy charcoal for the front and back. Sturdy/solid (read: not flimsy-feeling, almost seamless) plastic enclosure.

Slimmer (But Longer) Body: While the 1st Gen Astro E4 was wide and shaped like a portable hard-drive, the 2nd Gen version is shaped like a flat glasses case (or a fancy pen case). This shape is much easier to slip into a front/rear pants pocket (albeit a loose fitting pair of pants). Both version weigh about the same. Even if I am just at home on the couch or lying in bed, I can have my power source close by so I am not constricted by a cord going to the wall. At 13,000 mAh this thing just does not stop. It holds an unsurpassed charge for longer than any other devices I’ve used.

4G Technology in India

You may have heard lot about 4G. Though 3G in India has still not been implemented fully in many cities,  the  attention has already turned to the next generation of mobile communications, i.e. 4G.  It is said 4G will provide data transfer speeds up to fifty times more than what you use to get with 3G. When first generation mobile phones were launched, they were capable of communicating only through voice. 4G mobile communications will have transmission rates up to 20 Mbps—higher than of 3G. The technology is expected to be available by the year 2010.  4G is being developed to increase speeds up to 50 times higher than of 3G. However, the actual available bandwidth of 4G is expected to be about 10 Mbps.

3g Vs 4G

Wireless technology has transformed our lives in many ways. Until very recently, we needed a computer wired to a port, to get online. Even wired telephones are becoming a thing of past. Nowadays, we use our mobile phones for banking, to check ticket availability at a Cinema Hall, and many more. First things first, the “G” stands for a generation of mobile technology, installed in phones and on cellular networks. Each “G” generally requires you to get a new phone, and for networks to make expensive upgrades.

The ever increasing growth of user demand, the limitations of the third generation of wireless mobile communication systems and the emergence of new mobile broadband technologies on the market have brought researchers and industries to a thorough reflection on the fourth generation. Today, multiple IG and 2G standards are used in worldwide mobile communications. Different standards serve different applications with different levels of mobility, capability, and service area. Many standards are used only in one country or region, and are incompatible.

Third-generation mobile networks, or 3G, came to the U.S. in 2003. With minimum consistent Internet speeds of 144Kbps, 3G was supposed to bring mobile broadband.

4G Advantages

With the development of 3G technology in mobile communication, the interest of many research institute shifts towards future systems beyond 3G. Depending on the time such new systems are planned to be introduced and on the characteristic of improving or replacing existing systems they are called B3G (beyond 3G) or 4G. New generations usually bring new base technologies, more network capacity for more data per user, and the potential for better voice quality, too.

GPRS (CS1 to CS4) uses GMSK modulation with symbol rate (& modulation rate) of 270 ksym/s. Typical data rate of GPRS is ~115 kbps. It can be used for services such as Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) access, Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) and for accessing internet. IS-95B or cdmaOne is the evolved version of IS-95A and is also designated as 2.5G with theoretical data rates of upto 115 kbps, with generally experienced rates of 64 kbps.

A 4G system is expected to provide a comprehensive and secure all IP based mobile broadband solution to laptop computer wireless modems, smart phones, and other mobile devices. Facilities such as ultra-broadband Internet access, IP telephony, gaming services, and streamed multimedia may be provided to user. The 4g wireless uses Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), Ultra Wide Radio Band (UWB),and Millimeter wireless.
